A contract to export BrahMos cruise missile systems to a friendly country can be signed this year, spokesperson of the Russian-Indian joint venture Brahmos Aerospace, Alexander Maksichev, has said. Speaking to Russian news agency TASS, at the 14th International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition, Maksichev said the contract will likely be signed before the end of 2017.
“I believe the first export contract for the delivery of the BrahMos missiles can be signed by the end of 2017,” he was quoted as saying.
India and Russia agreed to export BrahMos in 2016, following which New Delhi cleared a desk to deal with sales of the missile system. According to the IHS Jane’s 360, the defence ministry has ordered BrahMos Aerospace to increase production to meet potential orders.
India is reportedly in talks with Vietnam for the export of system, possibly to help it counter China’s growing adventurism. At least 11 countries, including the UAE, Chile and South Africa, have expressed interest in procuring the missile system.
This development comes soon after India tested BrahMos-ER missile. It is the latest version of the cruise missile and has an extended range of 450km. Defence Research and Development Organisation chief Dr S Christopher has hinted at developing a version of the missile that can cover a range of 800-850km.
