Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while delivering the Union Finance Budget 2019-20 on Friday (5 July) announced that foreign student exchanges for Indian universities and institutions would be promoted under the ‘Study in India’ initiative.
She added that India’s flagship institutions IITs and IISc would spearhead research programmes to provide engineering solutions. Sitharaman proudly informed that while no Indian institution was ranked in the top 200 five years ago, two IITs and IISc have now breached the barrier.
A National Research Foundation would be setup to fund and coordinate research in India. In order to upgrade the level of teaching in the country, the government would promote the Gian initiative.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
