All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has cleared the rumours regarding GATE ( Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) being made compulsory for an engineering degree, that is, BE or B.Tech.

Denying it in a public notice, AICTE clarified that no such condition was imposed till date and the students shouldn't believe in rumours, as reported by TOI.

MP Poonia on AICTE website stated that “AICTE has noted with concern some reports stating that AICTE has decided to make GATE as mandatory exit examination. The council hasn't issued any such notification. This is issued to clarify all stakeholders”.

Officials from the Directorate of Technical Education say that the rumours about such a course being introduced started last year when the topic came up in the AICTE meet. The reports then emerged in media regarding this rumour, with the social media circulating it widely. This had sent the teachers and parents, along with students on a panic mode.

The government had expressed concern regarding the employability of the engineering graduates after a survey found that, apart from IITs, NITs and a handful of other institutions, the majority of them were unemployable. This had set off the rumours which gained even more momentum after another apex body — Medical Council of India (MCI) proposed to make exit examination compulsory for obtaining medical degrees.
