The government has decided to fast-track the integration of the air variants of BrahMos cruise missile to the Sukhoi jets, reports Zee News.

According to the report, 40 Sukhoi 30 MKI jets will be modified to carry the BrahMos-A missiles in a closely guarded strategic project aimed at boosting the combat capability of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the BrahMos Aerospace Limited have been asked to expedite implementation of the project to get it completed much before the scheduled deadline of December 2020.

With the modification, IAF's capability to strike from large stand-off ranges on any target in sea or land is expected to go up manifold. As per an assessment by the IAF, the missile coupled with the superlative performance of the Sukhoi aircraft will give the IAF an unmatched strategic reach.

The 2.5-ton missile, which flies almost three times the speed of sound at Mach 2.8, has a range of 290 km, that can be extended up to 450 km.
