In a positive development, the Government has successfully electrified as many as 19 villages in Siachen, taking Ladakh closer to the milestone of achieving carbon neutrality, reports The Economic Times.
The electrified villages are Chamshen, Kuri, Charasa, Burma, Pinchimik, Hasara, Kyagar, Sumooor, Lakjung, Tirith, Tyaksha, Panamik, Tirisha, Hargyam, Fukpochey, Kobet, Ayee, Aranu and Sasoma.
The villages have been electrified using the power generated from the 450 kilowatts (KW) Chamshen micro-hydel project. It should be noted that the Chamshen project has been funded by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy under the Ladakh Renewable Energy Initiative (LREI) scheme.
The project was executed by the joint effort of the Power Development Department and Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency (LREDA). As a result, these villages will no longer have to depend on the supplies from three diesel generator (DG) sets which included 160 kVA Panamik DG set, 160 kVA Chamshen DG set and 250 kVA Kyagar DG set.
As per details shared by Power Secretary Ravinder Kumar, the surplus power generated from the project could be supplied to the Indian Army to meet the needs in the border areas.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
