Govt Signs Peace Agreement With Five Insurgent Groups Of Assam To End Violence In Karbi Anglong Region

In an attempt to put an end to the violence in the Karbi Anglong region, a tripartite agreement has been signed between the central government, the Assam state government and five insurgent groups of the northeastern state.

The insurgent groups that have signed the peace accord are -- Karbi People’s Liberation Tiger factions, United People’s Liberation Army, Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front, and the People's Democratic Council of Karbi Longri.

Almost 1000 militants from these groups have surrendered along with their arms and now joined the mainstream as a result of this agreement.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah was involved during the signing of the treaty and he affirmed that long-term peace and overall development will be brought about in Karbi Anglong through this accord.

He also revealed that a development package worth Rs 1000 crore will be provided to Karbi Anglong. He further assured of the central and the state government’s commitment towards holistic development to bring about peace in the region.

“Over 1000 armed cadres have abjured violence and joined the mainstream of society, which reflects their trust in Modi ji's leadership. I want to assure everyone that we will implement this accord in a time-bound manner,” Shah’s statement was quoted in a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

The Home Minister also explained that the Karbi-Anglong Agreement is yet another milestone in the ‘insurgency-free prosperous Northeast’ vision of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.
