Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Puri has said that the NDA government’s ‘Housing for All’ scheme, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) is set to achieve its target of 1 crore households by 2020, Economic Times has reported.

"We had decided to build one crore houses by 2022. We have already sanctioned around 84 lakh houses and I am fully confident that by the end of this year, the entire one crore houses will be sanctioned," said Puri.

He also expressed optimism about the fast-track construction of the houses after being sanctioned. He also said that the ministry had received an additional demand assessment of 12 lakh more houses that can be built under the scheme.

Puri also informed that 24 lakh houses had already been handed over to the beneficiaries and the number is soon set to touch 50 lakh.

The scheme, which had been launched in 2015 targets Economically Weaker Sections and Lower Income Groups and provides several incentives for families in these categories to help them procure their own housing.
