In a video clip going viral on social media, a politician belonging to the Trinamool Congress party (TMC) is seen telling the crowd that if they come together on one side, the Muslims in India can create “four new Pakistans”, and then 70 per cent of the population (the majority community of Hindus) “will have no where to go”.

“We are 30 per cent and they are 70 per cent. They will come to power with the support of the 70 per cent, they should be ashamed. If our Muslim population moves to one side then we can create four new Pakistans. Where will 70 per cent of the population go?,” TMC leader Sheikh Alam was quoted as saying by ANI.

The statement was made by Alam yesterday when he was reportedly addressing the people in Nanur, Basapara, in Birbhum constituency.

The controversial statement immediately caught attention of the Opposition parties.

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) IT Cell head Amit Malviya shared a tweet with Alam’s remarks.

“He obviously owes his allegiance to Mamata Banerjee... Does she endorse this position?.. Do we want a Bengal like that?” he said.

In another tweet he said, “TMC leaders like Sheikh Alam have the audacity to dream of four Pakistans because of Mamata Banerjee’s brazen appeasement politics over the last 10 years. She reduced the majority community in WB to second grade citizens, where they had to seek court approval even for Durga visarjan!”
