In a major development, India is set to launch an ambitious "Deep Ocean Mission" which would explore minerals, energy and marine diversity in the underwater world a big portion of which remains unexplored even today, reports Indian Express.
Secretary at the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), M Rajeevan said that the required approvals for the "futuristic and game-changing" mission are being obtained and it is likely to be launched in next three to four months. The mission will likely cost the exchequer Rs 4,000 crore.
Rajeevan also shared that the mission would involve the development of technologies for different deep ocean initiatives.
While the mission will be led by MoES, it would also involve other departments and organisations like the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). ISRO and DRDO will be developing some of the technologies involved.
One of the main aspects of the mission will be design, development and demonstration of human submersibles. Another aspect will be to explore the possibility of deep-sea mining and developing the necessary technologies.

The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
