The Indian Air Force (IAF) is planning on upgrading its Sukhoi Su-30 MKI fighter jet fleet with advanced weapons, avionics and radars in order to enhance its combat capabilities, Times of India has reported.

As per the new IAF chief R K S Badauria, when upgraded the Skukhois would be equipped with the latest avionics and a very powerful radar, comparable to the Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA).

The other additions would include a new computer systems for greater weapon control and integration of new missiles and precision guided ammunition.

Many of the current Sukhois of the IAF are already armed with the supersonic BrahMos cruise missiles.

It was earlier reported that the ‘Super Sukhoi’ upgrade for the IAF’s fleet of Su-30s is in advanced levels of discussions, with modernisation plans for avionics, engines and weaponry on offer.

The IAF, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the Russian government have been working on the upgrade programme.

The upgrade has the potential to unlock possibility of exports as there are number of Su-30s in service around the world that would also require upgrades in future.
