The Tamil Nadu Defence Corridor will be launched this week in Trichy with an array of new defence products, investments and an innovation hub to further improve manufacturing and design capabilities, said a top official of the government, reports The Economic Times.
As per Secretary Defence Production, Dr Ajay Kumar the corridor will be launched on 20 January with the focus being on the launch of new products and the defence innovation hub in Coimbatore along with the announcement of new investments by Defence PSUs and the private sector.
Top officials from the defence services along with Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other senior executives from defence PSUs, DRDO are expected to attend.
In August 2018 a Defence Industrial Corridor was launch in Uttar Pradesh’s Aligarh.
When asked how the two would differ, Kumar stated that there would be no difference in policy. The change will lie in the nature of defence activity as Tamil Nadu is a major defence manufacturing state, with a strong IT presence.
Kumar added that the state has a large base of engineering colleges which increases the talent pool. He claimed that Tamil Nadu was chosen over other states as it is less crowd and aces in the automobile manufacturing department.
The two corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are expected to create new industry clusters, MSME supply chain and testing facilities plus export facilitation centres.
