Three terrorists, including the brother of a serving IPS officer, have been slain in an ongoing operation by security forces in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today (22 January), reports Deccan Herald. An Army soldier was also wounded in the encounter.

The clash broke out after a joint force of the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Police began conducting a cordon-and-search operation in Shopian’s Shirmal village;. The operation was launched on the basis of intelligence inputs of suspected terrorists hiding there.

During the search operation, terrorists opened fire on the security forces, and three of them were killed in retaliatory firing. It is believed that a fourth terrorist may have managed to flee the encounter site.

One of those militants who was eliminated has been identified as Shamshul Haq Mengnoo, whose elder brother Inamul Haq is an IPS officer of the 2012 batch and is currently serving in the North-East.

Local villagers tried interfering during the encounter, with many of them marching to the site of the gunfight while pelting stones on the security forces. The security forces responded by dispersing the mob with tear gas.
