Presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden was leading United States (US) President Donald Trump by 10 points nationally, according to a new poll which showed that a majority of American voters viewed the former vice president better equipped to lead the country.
The Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll released on Monday (27 July) found Biden at 55 per cent support, against Trump at 45 per cent, reports The Hill news website.
Biden has support from 91 per cent of Democrats, compared to 87 per cent of Republicans who back the President.
Trump’s job approval rating is at 44 per cent positive, slightly above his all-time low in the poll of 41 per cent.
Meanwhile, a poll co-conducted by the Associated Press and the NORC Centre for Public Affairs Research at the University of Chicago revealed that Trump’s approval rating for his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic sank to 32 per cent, a record low, Xinhua news agency reported.
A striking majority of 80 per cent said the country “is heading in the wrong direction”, according to the poll, the highest since Trump’s presidency, casting a shadow over his re-election campaign.
On the economic front, just 38 per cent said the national economy is in good shape, compared with 67 per cent in January, according to the poll, another hit to the President’s hopes of playing the economy card as an election advantage.
