In a big boost for the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat clarion call and Make in India policy push, France-based Alstom has begun the domestic manufacturing of technologically advanced train cars for the under-construction Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut semi-high-speed corridor of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), reports Economic Times.
The company had won the contract for designing, building and delivering 210 regional commuter and transit train cars in May 2020. Along with this, the contract also included the job of providing comprehensive maintenance services for 15 years.
Under the contract, in total, Alstom will deliver 30 regional commuter train sets of six cars each and 10 intra-city mass transit train sets of three cars each. These train sets are being manufactured in a 100 per cent indigenous fashion, with over 80 per cent localisation.
The manufacturing of bogies and car bodies is taking place at Alstom's facility in Gujarat's Savli. The train testing will also be conducted at the said facility. Meanwhile, the propulsion systems and electricals for the train sets are being manufactured at the company's factory in Maneja (Gujarat).
