Even as a bill criminalising Triple Talaq is pending in Rajya Sabha, cases of Muslim men using it to torment their wives keep coming up. A fresh case has been reported from Uttar Pradesh’s Kairana, where a man gave triple talaq to his wife for giving birth to a girl child.
As per a report by Patrika, the woman named Gulista, who hails from Saharanpur district, married Shahid from Kairana one-and-a-half years ago. The woman was reportedly harassed over dowry right from the initial days of the marriage. Last week, all hell broke loose after she gave birth to a daughter. She was reportedly beaten up and harassed. She was subsequently given triple talaq and kicked out of the house.
The woman returned to her maiden house with the infant. The family approached the police and filed an FIR against the in-laws’ family. The police is trying to arrest the husband.
The woman told Navbharat Times that the in-laws constantly demanded Rs 50,000 from her and told her not to return to the house if she can’t manage the amount.
Last year, the Supreme Court declared instant talaq as unconstitutional, after which the Centre government brought a bill to make it an offence under Indian Penal Code. The bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha and is pending in the Rajya Sabha. If passed, it’ll make triple talaq a non-bailable, cognisable offence.
