M K Azhagiri, the eldest son of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, has expressed his willingness to return to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). However, he believes that his younger brother and party president M K Stalin was not interested in letting him rejoin.

Azhagiri, who has served as a Union Minister under the erstwhile United Progressive Alliance (UPA) regime, was expelled from the DMK prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha polls following a rift with his father. It is speculated that the cause of the rift was a turf war between the two brothers. Subsequent to his father’s death, Azhagiri had indicated that all the ‘loyal’ party workers supported him indicating a possible succession war within the DMK.

Azhagiri further went on to say that his absence from the party would cost the DMK to lose the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections similar to the losses they suffered in the 2014 Lok Sabha and 2016 Assembly elections. It is also believed that he may work against the interests of the DMK in the forthcoming elections to Tiruvarur and Tiruparankundran.
