The Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) government has decided to downgrade the security provided to separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. This development comes while the authorities are probing his role in the lynching of Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ayub Pandith.
Pandith, a resident of Nowpora Khanyar, Srinagar, who was on access control duty at the Jamia Masjid in the Nowhatta area of Jammu and Kashmir, was lynched to death by an unlawful assembly of people. Allegedly, Farooq was inside the mosque while an Islamist mob outside the mosque beat Pandith to death on the suspicion of being a non-Muslim person belonging to an Indian security agency.
In this regard, a case has been registered and investigation was taken up. To speed up the investigation process, a special investigating team was also constituted. The police has so far arrested five persons.
