Former MLA Navjot Kaur, wife of Navjot Singh Sidhu has been denied party ticket by Congress party for the Amritsar and Chandigarh Lok Sabha seats.
The party instead fielded former Railways Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal from Chandigarh and Gurjit Singh Aujla from Amritsar respectively. Bansal will be looking to win the MP seat for the fifth time from Chandigarh constituency.
“It is not clear whether the local unit did not push her case or she herself was not keen on Amritsar. There was, however, talk among local leaders about proposing the cabinet minister’s name instead,” said a senior leader of the party.
Kaur was vying to contest from Chandigarh and had Amritsar as a back-up, she had to drop out of the elections in 2017 in line with the party rule of ‘one family’ ‘one ticket’, giving her seat to her husband who eventually won the seat. Kaur was parliamentary secretary for BJP-SAD regime before switching over to the Congress party.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
