In a positive development, all the 3.15 crore scholarships provided by the Central government are set to be completely digitised from October onwards, including the 2.5 crore scholarships provided to Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Classes students, reports Economic Times.
An electronic portal for the same is presently being tested by the government. This will serve as the single point for disbursal of all scholarships given to meritorious students by the department of empowerment of persons with disabilities and ministries of social justice and empowerment, education, tribal affairs and minority affairs.
The said portal will streamline all the scholarship schemes which have been riddled with issues such as siphoning off of funds to non-beneficiaries, state governments not contributing their share to the scholarships and meritorious students not being able to get their scholarships if they change institutions et cetera.
The portal will have built-in features like a fixed schedule for scholarship payout, automatic disbursal of the Centre’s share in scholarship as the state contributes its share and the scholarships being beneficiary-specific and not institution-specific.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
