As many as 1,500 girls from different schools and colleges across Chennai performed Bharatanatyam at a function to mark the beginning of the 10th edition of the Hindu Spiritual and Service Fair (HSSF), reports New Indian Express.
The event, held at AM Jain College in Meenambakkam on Monday (28 January), was a spectacle to behold as the girls, decked in elegant Bharatanatyam attire, performed for 14 songs across seven languages - Tamil, Sanskrit, Malayalam, Hindi, Telugu, Marathi and Bengali. They were selected to reflect the seven themes of this year’s fair - the importance of ecological preservation, family and human values, women’s honour, patriotism, forest conservation, environment and wildlife protection.
Famed danseuse and Padma Bhushan award-winner Padma Subrahmanyam choreographed the event. She said, “The girls performed beautifully and created awareness about the message of the Hindu spiritual fair”.
Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award-winner Vasanthalakshmi Narasimhachari was the chief guest. T Jayanti, a member of the organising team, said, “The aim of the dance event is to popularise our classical dance along with themes of the spiritual fair.”
As many as 10,000 girl students also sang classical songs on the occasion.
The Initiative for Moral and Cultural Training Foundation and the Hindu Spiritual and Service Foundation have organised the fair together. The fair, which commenced in 2009, has now reached 10 states, and will be inaugurated on 29 January. It will go on till 4 February.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
