The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) will include data on incidents of lynching in the country in its annual report ‘Crime In India’ from this year onwards, The New Indian Express has reported. The 2017 report expected to be released in coming days will document all lynching incidents in the past year.
The NCRB report had not maintained any data on lynching incidents prior to this year’s report. There has been a huge demand for such data due to rise in incidents such as cow theft, child lifting and witchcraft. The data, which will be compiled by the government, will also include the causes of lynching.
The data thus compiled will help the government tackle the menace, according to an activist. This will also help in identifying vulnerable areas where such incidents can happen, according to advocate Alok Prassanna Kumar.
The government’s initiative will also help curb biased narratives spread by the media with the aid of selective databases on lynching incidents.
