The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has identified 271 locations for bicycle parking to be set-up across the city. This is set to provide a boost to the Public Bicycle Sharing (PBS) system. A tender has been rolled out by BBMP to construct the parking hubs, estimated to cost Rs 7.72 crore.
The parking hubs are spread over an area of 28 sq km. This is being done based on the report given by the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT). Deccan Herald quoted its source as saying, “Areas like MG Road, Vidhana Soudha, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Indiranagar, Banaswadi, HRBR Layout, HBR Layout and Kacharakanahalli will be part of the plan in the first phase of the project. In about six months’ time, the parking hubs will come up at these locations.”
Furthermore, the senior technical offer said, “The proposed PBS system is a fully automated bicycle-sharing system where bicycles are parked using dock-less technology. The system allows users to take the cycle from a parking hub, use it as desired and return it to either the same or any other parking hub,” Deccan Herald reported.
Most of the parking hubs will be state government-owned lands and will be geo-fenced, demarcated with different colours.
