In October, when a Delhi government school teacher’s pay increment faced a roadblock allegedly due to her students’ poor performance, the Director of Education discarded the criticism by saying that this was a ‘one in a million case’ and that the department had no intentions of following any policy that encouraged penalties for poor performance.
The official order that was issued by the Directorate of Education (DoE) said that the reason to not allow the increment was because they believed that the teacher was not sincere and devoted to her duty, and that she was “unbecoming of a government servant”.
C P Singh, president of the Government School Teachers’ Association (GSTA), said that under the Chunauti scheme, based on the ability of individuals, children are separated. The teacher taught the Nishtha section, that consisted of students who aren’t able to read. Hence, it is imperative that they would eventually fail in the examinations. The group is willing to take the matter to court, The Indian Express quoted in its article.
Director of Education Sanjay Goel has reviewed all the schools that have a zero per cent pass in the high school classes of IX-XII. He reassured that the department was doing its best to identify and mitigate the issue. He also clarified that in the process of review, no complaint or observation had been made against any teacher.
