Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh has accepted resignation of Navjot Singh Sidhu, reports ANI. Sidhu will no longer be a minister in the Punjab cabinet.
The official spokesperson informed the media that Captain Amarinder saw the resignation letter today in the morning and has sent the same to Governor V P S Badnore for formal acceptance.
Sidhu, considered close to Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, has been having tussle with the Punjab CM since day one of the Congress government in Punjab. Presence of his wife during the ghastly Dussehra train accident last year, then Sidhu’s visit to Pakistan, his closeness with the Pakistan army chief, and statements in praise of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had begotten embarrassment to Singh.
The gulf between the duo widened after Sidhu’s wife was denied ticket in the general elections. In the cabinet reshuffle last month, Sidhu was given portfolio of Power ministry, widely perceived as a punitive downgrade.
The spokesperson informed that the resignation letter contained just one sentence with no explanation or elaboration. Sidhu had earlier submitted the letter to party chief Rahul Gandhi bypassing Singh.
