The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday (14 April) granted bail to BJP Youth Leader Priyanka Sharma for sharing a Met Gala themed meme on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which had got her arrested in Howrah.
As reported earlier, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BYJM) leader was arrested and sent to 14 day judicial custody on Friday (10 May) following a complaint by TMC leader Vibhas Hazra.
The bail hearing in SC also bore witness to dramatic scenes. As per legal journalist Utkarsh Anand, the bench insisted that she apologise for sharing the meme by observing that, “This isn't done.. Can she not apologise for her act? We may grant bail on this condition”.
Advocate appearing for Sharma though resisted but the court again reiterated that her bail would only be granted if she apologises for the act.
This conditional bail though soon turned into unconditional bail after the court called back Sharma’s lawyer and modified the order requiring her to apologise. This means that she would be released immediately from jail.

The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
