The Supreme Court has permitted the use of fireworks during one of the major festivals in Kerala, ‘Thrissur Poornam’, which is held annually at Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur on the Pooram day, reports Live Law.
The order was passed by a bench comprising Justices S A Bobde, Mohan M Shantanagoudar and Indira Banerjee. The petition was filed by the management of some temples in Kerala, who were represented by senior counsel R Basant.
Basant argued that Thrissur Pooram festival had been celebrated by the petitioner temples from as early as 1798.
"It appears that displaying of fireworks has been an integral part of the celebration of this festival. Hence, we see no reason why the festivity should be suspended,” the bench noted.
As the temples arrange for the manufacture of the fireworks through their own licenses, the court asked them that to ensure that the fireworks they produce are only used and kept with them, and are not supplied to the market.
The date for Thrissur Pooram is going to be between 7 to 14 May 2019.
