Seven Decades Later: Indian Soldier Who Died In Second World War Finally Laid To Rest

An Indian soldier who laid down his life during the second world war as part of the British Indian Army in Italy, has been identified and laid to rest 70 years after his death, The Hindu has reported.

Palu Ram had gone missing on 13 September 1944 while fighting the German Infantry division at Poggio Alto in Italy. His mortal remains will be buried at a cemetery in Florence, Italy. Soil from Palu Ram’s grave will be brought to India and handed over to his relatives.

Palu Ram was 19 years old and was unmarried when he joined the British Indian Army in 1944. In the war, he served as part of 4th Battalion in the 13th Frontier Force Rifles. Another soldier of the same regiment, Sepoy Hari Singh had also gone missing during the war.

Lilu Ram, the panch of Hisar’s Nangthala village was contacted by the Zila Sainik Board to convey the news. Relatives of Palu Ram were found using the details available. Grandsons of Palu Ram's brother Moji Ram still stayed in the village. The family had received a pension for 25 years after he had gone missing. Moji Ram’s son Ramesh hoped that the soul of the deceased person rests in peace.
