Putting speculation to rest, state Congress president KS Alagiri has announced that the Congress would contest the Erode East bypolls on behalf of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) led Secular Progressive Alliance.
The bypoll has been necessitated due to the death of Thirumahan Evera, who was a Congress MLA.
Alagiri said that it is a seat won by the Congress and so it is the Congress that would contest it again. He said that the candidate would be announced in three days and he would meet all constituents of the alliance to seek their support.
Meanwhile, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has constituted a 14 member committee to devise the election strategy, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) remains in a fix as the issue of the two-leaves symbol remains unresolved.
It is also yet to decide whether to allow its alliance partner, the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) to contest the seat like in 2021.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
