In an unusual turn of events, a revenue officer in Telangana, V Lavanya, who only two years ago had been awarded the “best tehsildar” title in the state, has been arrested by authorities after a raid at her residence in Hyderabad recovered cash and gold valued at more than one crore rupees, reports NDTV.
The amount of cash which was found on the premises by the state anti-corruption bureau was around Rs 93.5 lakh, while the quantity of gold was 400 grams.
The district Lavanya was posted in was Ranga Reddy; officials became suspicious after her junior, a village revenue officer, Antaiah, was found accepting a bribe of Rs 4 lakh from a farmer for alteration of land records.
The total amount which the farmer was asked to come up with was Rs 8 lakh, out of which Rs 5 lakh was to go to Lavanya. It was this farmer who informed the anti-corruption bureau after this large amount was sought from him, even though he had previously already paid Rs 30,000.
Following the bust of her junior while taking a bribe, Lavanya was questioned by officials and even though she denied any wrongdoing, the following raid uncovered wealth possessed by her which was disproportionate to her official income.
