In a bid to double the farmer income by 2022, Assam government on 13 September announced decision to distribute one lakh pumps reports News On Air.

The pump sets are to be distributed through NABARDs’ rural infrastructure development project, said the State Minister of Agriculture Atul Bora. Of the pump sets, 11,000 will be solar. 30,000 will be electrical and 60,000 will be diesel operated. The farmers could buy the pump sets at 75-80 per cent subsidy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had early initiated a four-pronged strategy to achieve the goal of doubling farmers’ income by decreasing the input costs, ensuring proper prices for the produce, ensure minimal harvest and post-harvest losses, and create more avenues for income generation.

Subsidising pumps will help the farmer in reducing the input costs by significant margin. The Union Government had already allocated Rs 2.12 lakh crore over a period of five-year as a part of their commitment to double farmers’ income by 2022.
