In a saddening development, two policemen were martyred after Naxalites ambushed a C60 commando party in Poyarkoti-Koparshi area in Maharashtra's Bhamragad tehsil on Sunday (17 May), reports Indian Express.
As per the press note issued by the Gadchiroli Police, the two martyred were 30-year-old Sub-inspector Shanaji Honmane and 32-year-old constable Kishore Atram. Apart from them, three other policemen were injured and are presently undergoing treatment.
It should be noted that Honmane had recently been honoured with the prestigious Director General of Police (DGP)'s medal of valour.
The ambush turned encounter is also said to have led to the killing of four-five Naxals in the retaliatory response by the police force.
As per the police, Naxalites are known to be on a tactical counter offensive campaign (TCOC) during the months of April, May and June during which they generally carry out guerilla attacks on the forces.
