Leader of the BJP’s ally Shiv Sena, Uddhav Thackeray came out strongly against the Narendra Modi-led NDA government of which it is a part, over the demonetisation of high value currency notes. Demanding a roll-back of the move, the Shiv Sena supremo asked for a Brexit-like referendum to be held over the issue. He also asked the prime minister to respect the views of his predecessor Manmohan Singh.
“In Britain a referendum was held to decide whether they should move out of European Union. Even in India, we need a Brexit-like referendum to ascertain the public opinion on demonetisation. The move should be held back if it is causing unprecedented amount of inconvenience to the people. The hardships caused to people cannot be ignored.”Uddhav Thackeray
Backing Singh, Thackeray said that the former prime minister is a respected economist and that the government must seriously consider heeding his advice.
Singh had referred to the demonetisation drive as a ‘ monumental management failure ‘ in Rajya Sabha earlier today.
