In what comes as a pleasant surprise, the ‘poster girl’ for Aksharalaksham literacy programme is none other than the 96-year old Karthyayani Amma who has topped the Kerala State Literacy Mission's examination with 98 percent marks .
37,166 candidates were females out of the 42,933 candidates that sat for the first phase of Aksharalakshyam. 8,215 participants from the SC community and 2,882 from the ST community sat for the test.
“An Alappuzha resident, Karthyayani wrote the examination at the Cheppad Government LP School. And she’s dreaming big. She had enrolled herself in the literacy mission’s programme with the aim of completing her graduation” said a literacy mission officer as reported by TNIE.
A whooping 99.08 percent passed the examination. Palakkad district came first with 10,866 candidates passing followed by the capital city which secured the second place with 9,412 passing candidates.
The certificate distribution ceremony will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan who will award the certificate to Karthyayani.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
