Continuing its stellar show in Uttarakhand, Bharatiya Janata Party has bagged five out of seven mayoral seats in the recently concluded urban bodies election in the state, Jagran has reported.
The urban bodies elections in the state were conducted on Sunday (18 November) and counting of ballot papers began on Tuesday (20 November).
Out of the total 84 seats - including heads of 7 municipal corporation, 39 municipal council, and 38 nagar panchayat - BJP emerged victorious on 34 seats while the Congress bagged 25 seats.
Five of the seven mayoral seats in Uttarkhand - Rudrapur, Dehradun, Kashipur, Rishikesh and Haldwani - were won by BJP candidates with opposition Congress winning in Kotdwar and Haridwar.
Counting for the seats of 1084 ward members in the state is still going on. However, of the 1,028 results declared, BJP won 307 seats, Congress won 166 seats while independents won over 540 seats.
BJP, in the 2017 assembly elections, had swept the elections by winning 57 seats out of the 70 seats in the state assembly reducing Congress to just 11 seats.
The urban bodies elections were significant for both the parties as both wanted to gauge the public mood before the upcoming 2019 general elections for Lok Sabha.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
