The Unites States Electoral College today (20 December) confirmed the victory of Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election over the Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. He went past the 270 electoral votes necessary to win a US election.
This would have been an exercise in formality at any other time, but it gained significance in light of Democrat activists and Trump opponents continuing to urge electors - most of them party members - to vote against the Republican. At least 37 Republican voters had to abandon their candidate if Trump’s path to the White House had to barred - a tall order.
But now, after the official casting of votes, not near enough Republican electors voted against Trump and his victory was, therefore, sealed. Trump took to Twitter after his official win:
We did it! Thank you to all of my great supporters, we just officially won the election (despite all of the distorted and inaccurate media).

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
