Update: The tweets have since been deleted, and the woman who tore up the holy text has since offered an unconditional apology apart from deleting her account.
Original story follows after tweet:
Since @RajniShaleen has issued an unconditional apology, I am deleting the previous tweet and video. But I stand by my POV that India must get rid of laws related to âblasphemyâ and grant freedom to criticize all religions and religious scriptures. Believers, donât be so touchy!

A woman from Chandigarh has torn apart the Bhagwad Gita, as a sign of protest against the new blasphemy laws in the state of Punjab. Addressing the Chief Minister, Capt. Amarinder Singh, she questions if tearing up of a holy scripture can really symbolise disrespecting a religion or faith one follows.
The video has gone viral now, getting both criticism and appreciation from across India. Watch it below.
Now this is a Hindu theist, die-hard lord Krishna bhakt, whom I totally love! @RajniShaleen tears apart Bhagavad Gita, dares Punjab chief minister @capt_amarinder to arrest her for the so-called âblasphemyâ which he is to criminalize. My kind of a woman. India is changing. ðð pic.twitter.com/RySGO69xEV

Rajni Shaleen Chopra has gone on to challenge the state of Punjab legally if need be. Twitter has been divided over the issue, and some of the users have challenged her to do the same with other religious texts such as the Bible and the Quran.
