The Mamata Banerjee led Trinamool Congress has amassed a big lead in the West Bengal assembly polls even as the BJP emerges as the second largest party, as per trends published by the Election Commission.
As per EC data available for 223 out of 292 seats, the TMC is leading on 149 while the BJP is leading on 70. The majority mark in the state is 148.
As per reports, top BJP leaders like Babul Supriyo, Swapan Das Gupta and Locket Chatterjee are trailing in the state. Suvendu Adhikari who is contesting against Mamata Banerjee is leading from Nandigram.
These early trends are a sharp contrast to the exit poll predictions which had mostly projected a neck and neck fight between the TMC and the BJP. Only the Today's Chanakya exit poll had predicted a comprehensive TMC win.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
