Authorities in UP’s Meerut zone have ramped up security along the Kanwar route to ensure real-time surveillance before the yatra, reported The Times Of India.
DIG (Meerut zone) Kalanidhi Naithani said that over 5,000 CCTV cameras have been installed in the zone, covering Meerut, Baghpat, Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar and Hapur.
Meerut district alone has 2,000 cameras, including 400 advanced IP cameras, monitoring key routes and temples.
Authorities will also integrate private camera feeds to improve surveillance.
The Local Intelligence Unit (LIU) and other agencies have begun coordinating with Uttarakhand, Haryana and Delhi for swift information sharing and responses.
Fire tenders will deploy along these routes for emergency preparedness from 11 July.
Security and other arrangements are being made at major temples like Baba Augarnath and Pura Mahadev, which draw lakhs of devotees,
Meanwhile, Meerut police have issued strict guidelines for DJ operators.
“We are enforcing regulations on the height and width of DJ setups to avoid accidents," SSP Vipin Tada was quoted as saying by ToI.
In 2023, six kanwariyas were electroculated after their DJ setup touched a high-tension line, while a similar incident in Bihar in 2024 claimed nine lives.
Further, electric poles along the Kanwar route have been wrapped in black and blue plastic by the electricity department, along with reflective radium strips to prevent electric shocks and improve visibility.
