Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, during a press briefing on Monday (13 January), provided crucial insights into the security situation along the northern borders of the country.

On Jammu and Kashmir Terrorism

He revealed that "60 per cent of terrorists killed in Jammu-Kashmir are Pakistani," highlighting the persistent infiltration of terrorists from across the border.

Additionally, he emphasised that "80 per cent of the terrorists active in the state are also Pakistanis at a time when we are moving towards tourism from terrorism.”

Towards resolution of issues in Depsang and Demchok

Turning to the conditions in Depsang and Demchok, General Dwivedi confirmed that the situation in the two critical regions of eastern Ladakh has been resolved.

He stated, "In October, the situation in Depsang and Demchok in Eastern Ladakh was resolved. The patrolling of traditional areas in these two sub-sectors has commenced."

He added that "traditional grazing has also commenced in these two areas," and that "I have authorised all my co-commanders to handle these issues at the ground level with respect to patrolling and grazing so that these trivial issues can be resolved at the military level itself."

General Dwivedi further assured that the Indian Army’s deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) remains "balanced and robust," ready to address any challenges.

The focus on "capability development for northern borders enabled infusion of niche technology into a war-fighting system" was also underscored.

On National Security and Media's Role

General Dwivedi also touched upon the significant role of mass media in national security.

He expressed that he is "a strong proponent of the theme that mass media and security forces have great potential to converge together towards nation-building and national security."

On Northeast

Addressing the situation in Manipur, the Army chief acknowledged that "cyclic incidents of violence are continuing but security forces are working to bring in peace."

He further mentioned the ongoing "enhanced surveillance and dominance over the Myanmar border" and noted that "fencing is also in progress.”
