The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has extended the deadline for its Expression of Interest (EOI) regarding the development and maintenance of open spaces along the Mumbai Coastal Road Project to 7 March, Indian Express reported.

The decision comes after the civic body received only one bid by Tuesday (11 February), prompting requests from four to five corporate entities seeking additional time to assess the vast 70 hectare land parcel.

“Since the land parcel is huge, the interested parties require more time to study the space, evaluate the costs of development, maintenance etc," a source privy to the developments was quoted as saying in the IE report.

Following the selection of a private agency, bidders will submit proposals and designs for the open spaces, which will be forwarded to Municipal Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani for approval.

Upon receiving the commissioner’s clearance, BMC will commence development on the land.

While the works on the 7.5 kilometre promenade are expected to be completed by March 2025, Gagrani has indicated that the full-scale development of open spaces will take two years.

Of the 111 hectares reclaimed from the sea for the MCRP, 70 hectares have been allocated for green spaces, gardens, cycling tracks, and amphitheatres.

A Marine Drive-style promenade spanning 7.5 kilometres is under development, covering 11 hectares, while Tata Sons Limited is beautifying the 5 hectare median of the arterial road.

For the remaining 53 hectares, BMC is looking to rope in private entities for development and upkeep.

Despite closing the initial EOI on 11 February, BMC received only one response.

Meanwhile, citizens have voiced concerns over the project, with an online petition urging the creation of an urban coastal forest featuring dense, native trees such as peepal and banyan within the expansive open land along the arterial road.
