After Jhalawar Tragedy, Education Ministry Orders Mandatory School Safety Audits, Asks To Report 'Potential Harms'

The Ministry of Education has directed all states and Union Territories to conduct quick school safety audits, a day after a devastating roof collapse in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district killed seven children and injured 28 others, reported The Indian Express.

The directive, issued on Saturday (26 July), asks states and UTs to assess the structural integrity of school buildings and ensure comprehensive safety for students. Officials stressed that schools must act urgently to avoid similar incidents.

“States and UTs must take urgent steps to ensure students’ safety and well-being. This includes mandatory safety audits of schools and child-related facilities as per national safety codes, training for staff and students in emergency preparedness, and the provision of psychosocial support through counselling and peer networks,” a senior MoE official stated.

The ministry instructed schools to verify fire safety compliance, emergency exits, and electrical systems. Authorities must train staff and students in evacuation drills, first aid, and safety protocols.

Officials further advised states to strengthen collaboration with local agencies such as NDMA, fire services, police, and medical departments for conducting regular training sessions and mock drills.

“Any dangerous situation, near miss, or incident involving potential harm to children or youth must be reported within 24 hours to the designated state or UT authority. Strict accountability must be ensured in cases of delay, negligence, or failure to act,” the official added.

The ministry also urged schools to prioritise mental health support and involve parents, communities, and local bodies in identifying unsafe conditions in schools or transportation.
