In the aftermath of the tragic Mumbra train accident that claimed four lives and left several injured, pressure mounted on authorities to ease the burden on Mumbai’s overstretched suburban rail network, especially beyond Thane.
Taking swift action, Kalyan MP Dr Shrikant Shinde convened a high-level meeting with top MMRDA officials, resulting in a key decision to extend the Thane–Bhiwandi–Kalyan Metro Line 5 up to Ambernath via Ulhasnagar, reported The Free Press Journal.
Dr Shinde, in a post on X, announced, “The Metro Line 5, which currently connects Thane, Bhiwandi, and Kalyan, will now be extended from Durgadi Naka to Chikhloli Railway Station in Ambernath. This extension along the Kalyan-Badlapur Road will provide significant relief to commuters from Ambernath, Badlapur and Ulhasnagar and reduce the burden on local trains.”
The extended corridor will include an integrated transport hub at Chikhloli, allowing seamless interchange between suburban railway and metro services.
Aimed at easing congestion, lowering fuel consumption, and offering greener alternatives, the project is now set to move swiftly, with the MMRDA instructed to fast-track the detailed project report (DPR).
The meeting, chaired by MMRDA Commissioner Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, also included Shiv Sena MLAs Balaji Kinikar and Rajesh More.
Alongside the metro works, Dr Shinde pushed for quicker execution of pending infrastructure initiatives across the region.
Major complementary projects include the Kalyan Ring Road with a proposed two-tier corridor at Nevali, featuring both a flyover and metro viaduct as well as the U-type road project in East Kalyan and a flyover from Palm Resort to Vithalwadi over the Waldhuni River.
Dr Shinde also reviewed the status of the Navi Mumbai–Badlapur access-controlled corridor, urging speedy progress.
