Ahead Of Jharkhand Assembly Polls, Election Commission Orders Immediate Removal Of State's Acting DGP Anurag Gupta

The Election Commission on Saturday (19 October) directed the immediate removal of Anurag Gupta, the Acting Director General of Police (DGP) of Jharkhand, due to a "history" of complaints against him during past elections.

The ECI's decision to remove Gupta stems from complaints and actions taken against him in earlier elections, news agency PTI reported.

Jharkhand is gearing up for Assembly elections, scheduled in two phases on 13 and 20 November.

Until a new appointment is made, the duties of the DGP will temporarily be assigned to the most senior officer of the DGP rank in the state.

The Election Commission has also instructed the state government to provide a list of senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officers by 21 October, to enabling the appointment of a new DGP.

Additionally, a compliance report regarding Gupta’s removal is expected by this evening.

Currently, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is the largest and ruling party in Jharkhand, having 30 members in the 81-member state assembly, while its ally Congress has 16 members.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 25 MLAs in the Jharkhand Assembly.
