The Maharashtra government on Thursday (11 September) issued an official notification renaming Ahmednagar railway station as Ahilyanagar railway station, reported The Free Press Journal.

The Union Home Ministry had already approved the renaming after the government completed all required administrative formalities.

The decision had remained under review for several years, while local leaders and community groups consistently pressed for the change to honour the legacy of Ahilyabai Holkar in the region.

With the notification now in place, officials will now begin modifying railway signage, digital systems, maps, and public announcement mechanisms to display the new name.

The station boards and railway records will undergo gradual updates so that passengers and residents can see the transition reflected across platforms and services.

The move follows similar renaming initiatives in the state and underscores the government’s effort to commemorate historical figures through prominent public landmarks.
