Ahmedabad-Bound Sabarmati Express Derails Near Kanpur After Engine Hits 'Object Placed On Track', No Injuries Reported

The Ahmedabad-bound Sabarmati Express derailed near Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on early Saturday (17 August) morning.

The derailment involved 20 to 22 coaches of the train. However, there were no reports of injuries or casualties among the passengers or railway staff.

The incident occurred around 2.35 am when the train's engine struck an object on the track, leading to the derailment.

"The engine of Sabarmati Express (Varanasi to Amdavad) hit an object placed on the track and derailed near Kanpur at 02:35 am today. Sharp hit marks are observed. Evidence is protected. IB and UP police are also working on it. No injuries to passengers or staff," Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw wrote on X.

After the derailment, Indian Railways dispatched buses to the site to transport passengers back to Kanpur.

Vaishnaw also informed that a train was arranged for passengers for onward journey to Ahmedabad.

Additionally, an eight-coach MEMU train was sent to assist in the evacuation process.

The loco pilot said that some boulder hit the front portion of the engine which got badly damaged.

Earlier, Patna-Indore train has crossed the same track uninterrupted at 1.20 am.

The derailment has led to the cancellation of seven trains and the diversion of three others, causing significant disruptions in rail services in the region.
