A student at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in Uttar Pradesh has been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of being a member of global terrorist outfit Islamic State or ISIS.
The student has been identified as 19-year-old Faizan Ansari alias Faiz, a native of Lohargarh in Jharkhand district.
The NIA put out a press release on 20 July regarding the arrest on its official Twitter account. The note said that searches were carried out at his Jharkhand house as well as rented room in Aligarh on 16 and 17 July, and several electronic devices and incriminating material were seized.
The note further says that Faizan had hatched a criminal conspiracy along with some accomplices through social media platforms to support and propagate ISIS activities in India, and was trying to recruit youths for the cause. He was planning to do “hijrat” to an ISIS conflict zone.
A police case was filed on 19 July under sections of the IPC and UA (P) Act. Read the NIA press note below:
