In another assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday (15 September), a man named Ryan Wesley Routh has been arrested by Secret Service agents.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has responded to West Palm Beach Florida and is investigating what appears to be an attempted assassination of Trump, the agency said.

The 58-year-old accused was taken into custody after Secret Service agents fired shots near the perimeter of the golf course where Trump was playing.

Routh allegedly fled from the bushes where he had been hiding when the agents opened fire and managed to escape in a black vehicle. Police were able to locate the car with the assistance of witnesses who helped identify it.

At the scene, authorities recovered a high-powered rifle resembling an AK-47, equipped with a scope and a GoPro camera. However, Routh is just a suspect now and his relation with the recoveries has not been established yet.

As reported by the New York Times, Routh, a former construction worker from Greensboro, North Carolina, had no formal military experience.

However, he had previously expressed a strong desire to engage in armed conflicts, particularly in Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion. In one post on X (formerly Twitter), Routh stated his readiness to "fight and die."

"President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity," his campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a statement. "Fear not! I am safe and well, and no one was hurt. Thank God," Trump was quoted as saying.

Earlier in July, an assassination attempt was made on Trump in Pennsylvania. The young accused Thomas Matthew Crooks was arrested by the FBI.
