The Union government’s approval for the construction of a Metro corridor between Ramwadi and Wagholi has also led to discussions on a further extension up to Alandi, a prominent pilgrimage centre located nearly 20 km from Pune.
Officials have indicated that a feasibility study on the proposed link is expected to begin shortly, reported Punekar News.
Although the sanctioned corridor already provides for connectivity up to Vishrantwadi, political representatives and residents are pressing for the route to continue to Alandi, arguing that it would strengthen public transport in the city’s rapidly expanding eastern belt.
During a public interaction in Vishrantwadi on Sunday (31 August), Pune’s BJP MP Murlidhar Mohol confirmed that he had taken up the matter with Maha Metro.
“Alandi is a major pilgrimage destination. Extending Metro services to this town will not only benefit devotees but also improve overall connectivity for people in the surrounding areas,” he was quoted as saying.
Local communities, who have long struggled with inadequate public transport amid surging urbanisation and commercial activity, have welcomed the proposal.
Former corporator Anil Tingre, who has consistently backed a Metro link to Alandi, emphasised its wider benefits. According to him, the alignment would not only connect Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad but also enhance access to the Lohegaon airport.
Tingre further explained that he had earlier recommended adjustments to the design of the ongoing flyover and grade separator project at Vishrantwadi Chowk to ensure that the Metro’s alignment is not obstructed in the future.
“We suggested certain design changes to accommodate the Metro line smoothly and avoid confusion later. Several meetings with MP Mohol and civic officials have been held on this issue,” he said.
