Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday (1 August) said the state plans to add 15,000 MW of hydropower generation capacity through 13 new projects over the next three years, the Assam Tribune reported.

In a social media post, Khandu stated that Arunachal Pradesh has a total hydropower potential of 56,000 MW and is positioning itself as a major energy contributor to the country.

He said that the state is progressing rapidly in the power sector, with several projects that were earlier limited to paperwork now becoming a reality.

"With 56,000 megawatts of hydro potential, Arunachal is rising, not only as the hydro capital of India, but as a beacon of how natural beauty and modern progress can walk hand in hand," Khandu said in a post on X.

"13 new projects, totaling 15,000 MW, are on the way in the next 3 years," Khandu added.

The 600 MW Kameng project has been completed, and the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower project is close to commissioning. The 2,880 MW Dibang project, which is expected to be India’s largest hydroelectric plant, is also under development.

According to Khandu, the new hydropower projects are expected to contribute significantly to the state’s economy.

He said Arunachal Pradesh will receive Rs 4,171 crore worth of free power from these projects.

Additionally, Rs 735 crore will be invested directly in local communities to support infrastructure, livelihoods, and welfare initiatives.

He also mentioned that the state anticipates earning Rs 1,884 crore annually in dividends from its hydropower ventures.

Khandu emphasised that the focus of the hydropower expansion is not only on energy generation but also on economic development and improving the quality of life across the state.
