Assam CM Alleges Honey Trap Attempt During Jharkhand Polls, Links Incident To A Larger 'Political Conspiracy'

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday (9 August) alleged that an attempt was made to honey trap him during the Jharkhand Assembly elections in November 2024.

Speaking to the media, Sarma said two women had approached him and engaged in suspicious conversations, after which he asked them to leave immediately, The News 18 reported.

Sarma linked the episode to a social media post by Leader of Opposition and Jharkhand BJP chief Babulal Marandi, suggesting it may have been part of a larger political conspiracy.

In his post on X (Formerly known as Twitter), Marandi claimed a senior Jharkhand police officer had twice paid someone to travel to Delhi and Guwahati to frame Sarma, and said evidence of this would soon emerge.

Marandi, the first chief minister of Jharkhand, questioned whether state CM Hemant Soren was aware of the alleged actions, urging him to clarify his role.

He warned that an officer willing to target Sarma could just as easily turn against Soren in the future for personal gain.

At the time of the elections, Sarma was BJP’s co-incharge for Jharkhand, actively involved in campaign strategy.

The polls saw the JMM-led Mahagathbandhan secure a strong mandate, winning 56 seats and 44.37 per cent of the vote share, with JMM alone winning 34 seats.

The BJP-led NDA managed 24 seats with 38.14 percent vote share, a result seen as below expectations.
